Goal-setting, accountability, and working through life transitions.
Life coaching is forward-looking and goal-oriented. A coach works with you on where you want to get to and what is currently stopping you, using structured frameworks, questioning, and accountability. It sits distinctly from therapy, which deals with mental health, diagnosis, and the past, and from mentoring, which is typically someone senior in your own field offering career advice. A coach will not diagnose you, will not treat a mental health condition, and should tell you to seek clinical care if that is what you need.
Sessions usually run 45 to 60 minutes weekly or fortnightly, over an engagement of three to six months, with the first session spent on goals and a longer-term arc rather than a problem. Between sessions you will usually be given something specific to do, which is where most of the value sits. A coach who only talks and sets no actions is not delivering what you paid for. The tools vary widely — some use deliberate practice frameworks, some run through values and beliefs, some are largely accountability and habit design — so ask what their approach is.
Good coaching is uncomfortable in places and specific in others: hard about the thing you are avoiding, concrete about the next step, and never pretending to know your life better than you do. Be wary of anyone promising a transformation in a fixed number of sessions, and of coaches who push courses, supplements, or their own programmes as the answer. In India, prices commonly run from about ₹2,000 to ₹15,000 per session depending on the coach's training and whether you are working with a founder or a certified professional.
