Career changes, resume and LinkedIn rewrites, and interview preparation.
Career coaching is narrower than life coaching and much closer to a service than to therapy. The most common requests fall into four groups. Resume and LinkedIn work involves rewriting a CV for a specific kind of role and a specific market — often a shift from India to the US, UK, or UAE, where formatting expectations and length conventions differ considerably. Interview preparation means mock interviews with recorded feedback, which is worth far more than generic tips, particularly for senior roles. Career change counselling is the harder work: deciding whether to move, and into what. Negotiation coaching covers offer evaluation, counter-offer strategy, and how to ask for more without damaging the offer.
Check what a package actually includes, because this is where the pricing varies. Some coaches sell a single session for a resume rewrite. Others sell a three- or six-session package covering assessment, materials, mocks, and follow-up. Some work on a success or contingency basis, which is common in recruitment-adjacent services — if you see that, ask what is defined as success, because a definition of 'I got any offer' is much weaker for you than 'I got an offer at or above this figure'.
Vet for evidence of work in your market and your level. A coach who has only ever placed freshers in IT is not the right person for a director-level pivot, and a recruiter who is also a coach may optimise for filling your current role rather than moving you. Ask for a specific example: a client in a similar situation, and what happened. If they redirect you to a course instead of coaching, that is a business model, not a service.
