Budgets, debt payoff plans, and savings systems that hold up.
Financial coaching is about behaviour, not products. A coach builds a budget you will actually keep to, works through existing debt, and sets up the accounts and automations that make saving happen without you deciding to do it each month. This is a distinct service from a financial advisor, who is regulated and gives advice on specific investments and insurance; a coach will tell you they are not that, and will not sell you a product. The distinction matters more in India than in many markets, so check the registration of anyone advising on investments — SEBI-registered investment advisers and RIAs are not interchangeable with a coach.
Two questions come up constantly. Debt payoff has two standard methods: the avalanche, which targets the highest interest rate first and mathematically costs the least, and the snowball, which clears the smallest balance first and builds momentum people can actually sustain. Clients frequently succeed with snowball and fail with avalanche despite the maths, so a good coach will start with which one you will actually finish. Emergency funds are the other priority — commonly three to six months of expenses — and the usual finding is that the money exists but is not ring-fenced.
Expect a structured engagement: an initial session to understand your full position, a plan you leave with, fortnightly or monthly check-ins for accountability, and a re-plan as circumstances change. A coach working properly will ask for your actual statements, not a summary, and will get access to your accounts so they can see the truth rather than your account of it. If a coach only works from a questionnaire, they are advising on a picture you have drawn for them.
